First edition of Boole’s paper establishing the calculus of operators, which developed calculus into a general tool for analysis. This work is a precursor for symbolic computation, as Boole utilised operational symbols as if they were numerical quantities. This work resulted in Boole’s receiving the Royal Society’s first gold medal in mathematics.
