First edition of Bolzano’s investigation into the theoretical foundations of the concept of three-dimensional space, and of the notion of ‘dimension’. Bolzano launched a fundamental critique of the basic premises of our concept of space. ‘The problems raised in this connection by Bolzano found their final solution at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth in that branch of mathematics called topology’ (DSB). His work was done without the benefit of knowledge of the work of Gauss, Bolyai, and Lobachevskii.
