8vo (24 x 16.5 cm). Title, vi pp. and 64 stipple engraved handcoloured costume plates each with protective blank leaf (unusually made of the same paper) and a page of descriptive text in English. Contemporary red half morocco over marbled boards, paper label with title to upper cover, spine with raised bands, uncut; rebacked preserving spine, slightly rubbed.

A fine, VERY FRESH AND UNCUT COPY of this celebrated work, based upon Miller's 'Costume of the Russian Empire' (itself based upon Georgi's 1776-1780 work). The first 12 plates depict people of Finnish origin and plates 13 to 35 describe the Tartars. Plate 36 to 50 cover people from Siberia and the East while the rest depict the Mongols and other small tribes from all over the Empire.
