(ii) + vi + (iv) + 112pp, folding engraved map, some hand colouring, and many woodcut text ills ; (ii) + 147 + (1)pp, folding engraved map, hand coloured, and many woodcut text ills. 16pp adverts at back. Orig. ribbed cloth, gilt vignette and lettering on upper cover, spine repaired. Ottley No.6482 (1839 edn) and Skempton No.1900 (also 1839 edn.) Ownership inscription of Joseph Maudslay. An outstanding copy of a lovely railway guide. It contains two fine, hand-coloured engraved maps, each with a vignette (one of Euston Station, one of a locomotive and carriages) and a series of charming wood-engravings in the text. The book first appeared in 1839 published by Hayward and Moore. This is the 4/6d version which was issued without steel engravings. The present copy bears the ownership inscription of Joseph Maudslay, son of Henry Maudslay, and a pioneer in the use of direct-acting marine engines.
