8vo. 20pp, interleaved with blanks, folding engraved map, hand coloured. 19th century diced cloth. 19th century ownership stamp on title. Skempton No.19. Allnutt, connected for most of life with the Thames Navigation was well qualified to produce this book, which is just as useful as the title claims. It was prepared for the use of anyone who might have an interest or use for the inland waterway system centred on the River Thames, such as river and canal share proprietors, merchants, manufactureres, wharfingers, navigators and traders in general. It includes the Thames, Wey, Kennet, Avon and Severn navigations and the Basingstoke, Kennet & Avon, Wilts & Berks., Thames & Severn, Stroud, and Berkley & Gloucester canals. Also shown on the map, though not described are the South Wales canals and their associated railways. A rare item. Although marked “Second edition” on the title-page, the Skempton biography notes that no first edition has ever come to light.
