The building of Robert Stephenson's Britannia Bridge, completed in 1850, was watched with breathless interest all over the world and several enterprising Welsh journalists and publishers produced accounts to sell to the hoards of visitors who flocked to the site. The most dramatic event was the floating of the huge tubes into position between the piers and their jacking up into place high above the water and the present account gives a graphic eye-witness account of this awesome spectacle.
