(KARACHI HARBOUR) PARKES, William

Kurrachee Harbour. Second report on the state of the harbour.

Bombay, The Education Society's Press, Byculla, 1864 1864

Description

8vo. 39 + (1)pp, 4 folding litho plans. Orig. printed wrappers. William Parkes, an associate of James Walker, was sent by him to Karachi to make surveys and to prepare plans for the work on the harbour improvements. This comprehensive report vividly conveys the administrative problems for British engineers working overseas as well as recording changes in the harbour produced by the first groyne, recently completed. Of particular interest are Parkes’s comments on unexpected consequences caused by such unfamiliar phenomena as monsoons. Based on Walker’s original report, he goes on to recommend possible future works, including the provision of a system of basins and docks and the construction of a graving dock using Edwin Clark’s hydraulic lift, one of which was successfully in use in Victoria (London) dock and several more of which were under construction.
