8vo. x + 235 + (1)pp, photo portrait frontis and 1 further photo portrait Orig. cloth, rather worn and lower joint splitting. Presentation copy from Gordon’s two sisters. Lewis Gordon began his engineering life working under Marc Isambard Brunel on the Thames Tunnel before becoming the first professor of the first university course on civil engineering in Britain, established in Glasgow in 1840. However, he was also concerned in more practical aspects of engineering, in particular submarine telegraph cables. He was a partner in the famous firm of R.S.Newall & Co., the major suppliers of armoured core marine cables in the early years of the electric telegraph industry. The memoir contains much information on the laying of the Red Sea cable and the first Singapore-Batavia cable. It was printed for private circulation only and is therefore scarce.
